Eating Well or Denying Yourself

So the other night I had dinner with a friend. A hard-working, successful guy. I’ve know him for a long time. Over the years I’ve known him to gain some, diet/workout, lose weight…gain weight, diet/workout, lose weight. At dinner, we were talking about diet (surprise!) and he was in a gain phase.
During our conversation he mentioned that he doesn’t like to deny himself. I found that interesting and meaningful. Meaningful for him as to why he keeps re-gaining weight. Rather than eat bad some of the time to maintain his weight, he goes through periods of eating poorly and regaining the weight because he doesn’t want to “deny” himself. Deny himself from what? Eating too much unhealthy, high fat food that will cause him to re-gain the weight he worked so hard to lose? What is it about the feeling of denying yourself? How many people who lose and re-gain weight feel like they can’t/don’t want to deny themselves?
